N30 Grip

Status: Finished | Last updated: 2/10/18

The company 8Bitdo makes a compact form factor Bluetooth controller called the N30PRO which has been great for playing games on my phone and laptop. It has a firmware update to support the Nintendo Switch, but there is one problem: this controller is painful to use for an extended amount of time. It does not have anything for your palms to rest on. I wouldn't really have their design any other way since, being so small, it's very portable. There were 3 primary goals for this project: the grip must keep the indicator lights visible, it cannot block the the shoulder buttons, and the controller needs to fit perfectly without using clips while being easy to remove.

Modeling I used a shortcut in getting the insert just right for the controller. I traced the shape in Inkscape and then exported the .svg into Blender. Then I extruded the shape and used it as a Boolean to cut away at my grip shape. The handles are just extruded spheres with modifiers to squish them down and curve them in, then mirrored. I could've smoothed the handles out more, but the prototype print felt pretty good with the low-poly texture. I'll release a smoother version when I finish the public STLs for this project.
